"Pearl of the Tyrrhenian Sea" - this is what the inhabitants of Viareggio lovingly call their town. It is the oldest, largest and liveliest seaside resort on the Tuscan Riviera. Off the coast lies the Pelagos Marine Reserve, a large whale sanctuary between Italy and France. It is estimated that there are about 15 different species of whales and dolphins in the Mediterranean Sea. All of them are under serious threat. To protect the large marine animals, in 1999 "Pelagos" was founded by the Mediterranean neighbors France, Monaco and Italy. Marine biologist Silvio Nuti and his colleagues drive out to sea almost every day to watch a large dolphins school. Part of the research is devoted to bioacoustics, a field still largely unexplored.
