Out & away

Everyday life/Short Film, Germany 2013

Emma and her friends Ronje and Benjamin live in the village of Gjesvær on the Arctic island of Magerøya in the North Atlantic. The island belongs to Norway and is about two kilometres from the mainland. The main town on the island is Honningsvåg, which is located on the south coast and is home to around 2,400 people. Gjesvær is much smaller: the town has just 130 inhabitants. Emma's father works as fishermen in family businesses. The winters in Gjesvær are long, with heavy snowstorms still raging in May. There is no cinema or disco in the remote village next to the North Cape. What's life like in a place like this when you're 14 years old? The beautiful short film accompanies Emma through her everyday life in a calm and attentive manner, the camera stays close to the young, likeable protagonist. It provides insights into Emma's everyday life, her thoughts and actions, her wishes and goals.
