Netherlands, in the 17th century. Like his father, 14-year-old Peter Hajo, known only as Hajo by everyone, is drawn to the high seas. He wants to become an equally respected helmsman and explore the whole world. Even an accident at sea, in which his father was killed by a strong storm, does not deter him from doing so. When the legendary captain Bontekoe arrives in the city with his ship "Nieuw-Horn" to look for men for his next East India company, Peter scents his chance.
